Big Issues, Simple Explanations

The world faces some big challenges that affect humans, animals, and the environment. Understanding them is the first step to making a difference.

Real-World Examples

1 / Plastic Pollution

In 2018, nearly 800,000 volunteers across 107 countries participated in the International Coastal Cleanup, removing over 20 million pieces of trash, totaling approximately 9.3 million kilograms (about 20.5 million pounds) of waste from beaches and waterways.

2 / Climate Change

In 2023, Europe experienced its hottest year on record, with temperatures reaching unprecedented levels. The heatwaves led to significant health impacts, including over 47,000 heat-related deaths, making it the second deadliest year for heat-related mortality in Europe since 2015. These extreme temperatures were linked to climate change and have prompted urgent calls for enhanced climate action and adaptation strategies.

3 / Habitat Loss

In 2023, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon totaled 9,001 square kilometers, an area approximately the size of Puerto Rico. This marks the first time annual deforestation in the Amazon has fallen below 10,000 square kilometers since 2018. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore these vital ecosystems.

4 / Biodiversity Decline

Sea turtles are facing severe population declines due to habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and accidental capture in fishing gear. The critically endangered Hawksbill turtle has lost over 80% of its population in the last century. Conservation efforts like protecting nesting beaches and reducing plastic pollution are helping populations recover.

What You Can Do

Mountain

1

Reduce & Reuse

Choose reusable bottles, bags, and containers to cut down on single-use plastics and prevent waste from entering ecosystems.

2

Speak Up

Share what you’ve learned with friends, family, or online. The more people understand these issues, the stronger our collective voice becomes.

3

Support Conservation

Donate to or volunteer with organizations working to protect wildlife, restore habitats, and fight climate change.

4

Make Sustainable Choices

Buy products from eco-friendly companies, eat more plant-based meals, and reduce energy use where you can.

These issues may seem overwhelming, but understanding them is the first step toward creating change. From reducing plastic waste to protecting endangered species, every action—big or small—contributes to a healthier planet.

Keep learning, stay curious, and remember that informed choices ripple outward.
